A few weeks ago, I decided to unplug from Facebook and Twitter for four weeks. I’d been reading the book Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World (affiliate link) and was already pretty convinced about the need for distraction-free thinking time, and the addictive nature of constant Facebook-checking. So I was ready for it, but it still felt like a big step, especially as Newport’s challenge is for you not to announce your departure on the SoMe sites. You don’t go ‘I’m leaving for four weeks – big announcement’ – you just stop posting and, more important, looking.
I’ve written about the experience on my other business site. And from a mindfulness point of view, yes, I’d recommend it!
- Two weeks into a social media fast
- Breaking the social media fast
- Email 36 times an hour? (related post)
